AFSCME Presidential Endorsement Process

A presidential search committee of the AFSCME IEB will meet individually with all of the candidates: Democrats and Republicans. Those interviews will conclude by June 1st.

The candidates will be invited to the June 18-20 AFSCME Leadership Conference. During the course of the summer, AFSCME will do extensive polling and messaging to our membership to better inform the IEB. A Fall activist conference may be held to help finalize the endorsement process if necessary.

In effect, AFSCME is taking the lead of the AFL-CIO asking affiliates to not endorse individually until the AFL-CIO and AFSCME International have extensively studied the candidates and their campaigns. Both the AFL-CIO and AFSCME do not expect to complete their process until the Fall of 2007 at the earliest. Given the depth, breadth and quality of the candidate field, there is every possibility that no early endorsement will occur.
